Introduction.
Information and Communication Technology or ICT has been used widely surround the world either in economy, social, education, administration and others. In order to make our students catch up with the current development, ICT has been integrated in our education system. We used ICT in our education since long time ago in teaching and learning process. ICT is also used to enhance the students learning outcome and to increase the student’s creativity. There are several types of learning using ICT which are learning about ICT and learning with ICT. Learning about ICT means ICT skills not about the ways ICT can support learning and learning with ICT is we used ICT in our teaching and learning process.
Problem statements
The most important issue in integrating ICT in teaching and learning in our Malaysian school is the teachers do not have enough skills to handle the ICT’s equipment properly. Another issue is many people believes by using ICT in education, it can enhance teaching and learning process effectively and lastly the school will spent a lot of money on the ICT equipments.
Discussion
There are many challenges in integrating ICT in our education system especially for teaching and learning process. From the issue stated above which is the teachers lacking the experience and skills in handling the ICT’s equipment, not only the teacher will feel the burden but school also feel the same in order to integrate the ICT in teaching and learning process. There are many ICT equipments that teachers use in teaching and learning process like computer, liquid crystal display (LCD), projector and many more. All these tools are really high in cost and really sensitive to handle. The teachers and school administration need to take a good care for all those ICT’s equipment so that we can avoid it from damaged. This is because they had to spend a large amount of money not only when they buy the ICT’s equipments but also when they want to send these equipments to get the service. To solve this problem, the government needs to implement a safety rules in using the ICT’s equipments and place a professional teacher or technicians who is expert about the ICT’s tools.
Besides, in order to integrate the ICT in the learning process, many issues and challenges had to be face by the school, government and not to forget the teachers. For the former teacher who was born in year 1970’s, they might not have enough skill to handle the ICT’s equipment such as LCD, computer and others. This is differ to those who were born in the era of 1990. They have skill and enough knowledge about the usage of ICT and thus they can handle the ICT’s equipment better. In order to solve this problem, the government should send the teacher who have poor skill in handling the ICT’s equipment to participate in the ‘training in service’ or we called LDP in order to improve their skill so that they can manage their class wisely by using ICT.
Other issue that we have to face is the ability of ICT to enhance the quality of teaching and learning process effectively. In overall view, it is truth that ICT will enhance the effectiveness of teaching and learning process but we will look how the uses of ICT will help to enhance the teaching and learning process. Nowadays, teachers are using ICT in their lesson in order to motivate their students to learn and to stay on-task. Other than that, the positive aspect of this lesson is the most students appear to be more concentrate on their tasks and working quietly. However, sometimes most students use the computers for the other things like playing games on the internet or looking and searching something that are not related with their lesson at web pages. Besides, in writing or creating report most students will copy and paste the information from the web page without showing any demonstrating any understanding of the content of the subject. In the other word, there is no independent learning and do not achieve the objective of curriculum which is finding things out. So for the solution, the school administration need to block the website which are not related so the students can give full attention in their learning process.
Conclusion
As a conclusion, as a teacher we need to be fully prepared ourselves by mentally and physically in order to face all the challenges in education world especially in integrating ICT in teaching and learning process.
